In 2012, I was handed the task of overseeing discipline at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal, California. This role often felt reactive, like putting out fires after they had already started. However, I wanted to do more than just manage problems; I wanted to help prevent them altogether. That’s when I discovered Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), and starting a chapter at my school turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions of my career.
What started as a simple idea quickly grew into something amazing. In its first year, our SADD chapter had 250 members out of 1,800 students, and it wasn’t just the numbers that made it special. SADD brought together students from all lifestyles, creating a space where everyone belonged. Whether you were an athlete, an artist, or just someone looking for a way to make a difference, SADD welcomed you. The peer-to-peer model is one of its biggest strengths; it is inclusive, empowering, and all about students leading the charge.
And WOW, did it make an impact. Two students, Agustin and Julio, come to mind immediately. They didn’t just join the club—they owned it. Both rose through the ranks, taking on chapter, state and even national leadership roles. Watching them grow from quiet participants to confident, inspiring leaders was one of the most rewarding parts of the entire experience. Their stories are proof of what’s possible when students have the opportunity to lead and make a difference.
In 2013, I was honored to be named SADD National Advisor of the Year. But the truth is, it wasn’t about me…it was about the incredible students who made SADD what it was. That chapter transformed our school community, and it transformed me, too. Starting SADD taught me the power of giving students the tools to create change and watching them soar.
Although I’m no longer a SADD Chapter Advisor, I couldn’t walk away from the mission. That’s why I joined the SADD National Board of Directors. I believe in what SADD stands for. I’ve seen its impact firsthand, and I want to ensure that even more young people get the chance to serve as leaders in their communities. This work isn’t just important, it’s life-changing.
So here’s my challenge to you: If you’re an educator, administrator, or community leader, start a SADD chapter at your school. It’s an incredible way to build a culture of safety, leadership, and connection. You’ll be amazed at what your students can achieve.
And to all the alumni who’ve been part of SADD, especially those who served on the Student Leadership Council, don’t stop now. Take everything you learned and find ways to give back. Mentor a new chapter, spread the word, or join the organization in a new role. Your leadership is needed now more than ever.
SADD isn’t just a club; it’s a family. It’s a place where students grow, lead, and create lasting change. Whether you’re starting a new chapter or continuing your journey with SADD, know that your work matters and has the power to change lives.
The next chapter of this story is up to you. Let’s make it a book you can’t put down!
