Celebrate Safely this Graduation Season

You are done! You finished high school or college, and this is the summer when you can finally go all out and have a biggest adventures. Graduating is a monumental milestone, but it can turn ugly with just one poor decision. As you celebrate this achievement, it’s crucial to ensure everyone's safety while enjoying time together.

It’s summer… You might be considering talking off for the beach, blasting music, sunroof back, friends yelling over it to talk about going to that party later tonight, fully immersed in the fun and freedom. There’s a lot of red flags in this scenario. One of the key aspects of celebrating safely is understanding the importance of making informed choices. A responsible celebration doesn’t mean having less fun, but it means making choices that protect you. Just like when you’re driving. Self advocacy is key, telling passengers to tone it down, keeping the music low, and focusing on the road is critical to getting where you’re going safely.

Celebrating responsibly also honors the people who raised us all our lives and have sacrificed for you. At parties, it’s easy to get carried away. When you are excited you can cloud your judgment, but remembering that you are in control of yourself, and upholding your values, is important to being safe. Some tips that might help are: Staying with trusted friends, avoiding alcohol, and setting a time that you want to leave, are all ways to ensure that you won’t have a night that you’ll forever regret.

Graduating is a time to celebrate what you’ve accomplished, and by making responsible choices you will stay safe while also having the time of your life. As a graduate you influence others around you. Know your environment and who you're with. Having fun while being safe shows that you value your goals and your future, and doing the small things like wearing your seatbelt aren’t so little in the bigger picture. Balance the fun with focusing on what is right for you.
